NATURE AND HIKING PLANS
NATURE PLANS AND HIKING TRAILS
Cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian Sea, paths through meadows, unexpected forests, and routes where the landscape constantly shifts between sea and greenery. Ribamontán al Mar is best discovered on foot: without too much planning, letting the trails connect beaches, neighborhoods, viewpoints, and little corners that don’t always appear on maps.
These are our favorite routes.
The Frenchman’s Fountain
Just 13 minutes from the Casona
The route to the Frenchman’s Fountain follows a path that winds through a lush forest, always accompanied by the murmur of the river.
The walk is easy and very pleasant, ideal for families or those looking for a hike without steep inclines. Along the way, you’ll find small pools of crystal-clear water where, in the warmer months, you’ll want to stop and even take a refreshing dip.
At the end of the path, the Frenchman’s Fountain awaits. Legend has it that a French priest, fleeing the French Revolution, found refuge here and discovered the medicinal properties of the waters. At the end of the 19th century, it was a small spa that attracted people drawn by the properties of its mineral waters.
We think it’s a perfect plan to enjoy nature, cool off, and discover a charming spot, very close to the hotel.
Cliff Route
Between Loredo, Langre, and Galizano
The most popular route in the area, and deservedly so. A coastal path that links beaches, meadows, and some of the most spectacular cliffs on the Cantabrian coast. Below, the Cantabrian Sea and the waves; above, pilgrims on the Northern Way, grazing cows, and paths that constantly invite you to stop. Perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially at sunset.
CUCABRERA ROUTE
Galizano and its legends by the sea
A hike leading to the Cucabrera cave, hidden among cliffs and linked to ancient Cantabrian folk legends. The path crosses green trails and a eucalyptus forest until reaching this somewhat mysterious spot where the landscape and sea tales blend seamlessly.
Highly recommended for those seeking less traveled routes with a touch of seclusion
Mount Arna Route
Among pines, holly, and views of the Cantabrian Sea
A simple and very pleasant circular walk through pine forests, laurels, holm oaks, and holly, with open views towards the beaches of Somo and Loredo. Part of the route crosses the maritime pine forests ordered to be planted by Alfonso XIII, giving the route a very particular character between forest and sea.
It is an easy, cool walk, perfect for those seeking shade, nature, and tranquility without significant elevation changes.
The Cubas Estuary and the Osprey
Tranquil nature in the Bay of Santander.
The Cubas Estuary, where the Miera River flows into the Bay of Santander, offers one of the most special natural experiences in the area. Guided boat trips are organized along the estuary and the lower river basin, exploring protected areas of the Natura 2000 network and allowing you to observe birds in their natural habitat.
The osprey is one of the stars of these outings, which are conducted in small groups with a very respectful approach to the environment.
Mountain Bike Route Along the Cliffs
A Different Way to Enjoy Our Surroundings
For those who prefer to discover the landscape on wheels, there is a mountain bike route that crosses the cliffs between Langre and Galizano. Nature, country lanes, and open views of the Cantabrian Sea combine here with a dose of adrenaline and freedom that is hard to match.
Tirado and Calobro Route
The greenest part of Ribamontán
From the hermitage of San Antonio in Carriazo, this route ascends through small beech and oak forests to Alto del Tirado, with the option to continue towards Pico Funegra, the highest point in the municipality.
It’s about 5 kilometers of medium difficulty where the landscape changes completely compared to the coast: more silence, more forest, and a feeling of inland Cantabria that surprises you just minutes from the sea.
Trasmiera Ecopark
Nature, History, and Landscape
Just a few kilometers from La Casona, the Trasmiera Ecopark offers a unique way to discover the region. This open-air museum combines nature, history, art, and gastronomy in a landscape shaped by the tides, encompassing marshes, tidal mills, estuaries, and cliffs.
They organize guided tours, birdwatching, environmental workshops, and family activities throughout the year. In summer, they also offer theatrical tours and guided walks.
Agritourism and Rural Tradition
Discover the most traditional Cantabria and its farming life.
Beyond the beaches, the interior of Ribamontán al Mar maintains a vibrant rural life. Some livestock farms and small artisan workshops offer a glimpse into traditions that continue to be part of daily life in the region.
In Somo, for example, the pottery tradition linked to the village still survives. A different way to discover Cantabria through its everyday life, especially interesting for families or those looking for more than just scenery.
Loredo Derby
Horses Against the Cantabrian Sea
Every September, Loredo beach hosts the Loredo Derby, one of the oldest and most famous sand races in northern Spain. For a few days, the landscape is completely transformed: horses galloping along the sea, a festive atmosphere, and a tradition deeply rooted in local identity.
If your stay coincides with these dates, it’s absolutely worth experiencing at least once.
